United Kingdom safety regulators have issued an urgent nationwide warning following the detection of carcinogenic asbestos in a children’s toy sold via the popular fast-fashion and e-commerce platform Shein.
Testing conducted by the UK’s Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) revealed that structural components of a product marketed as the “Magic Clear Water Drawing Book” contained chrysotile, commonly known as white asbestos. Because asbestos exposure poses severe, long-term health risks—particularly respiratory damage and lung cancer—authorities instructed consumers to immediately stop using the item and directed its urgent withdrawal from circulation.
Following the safety findings, Shein removed the listing from its online marketplace. The company stated that punitive measures were enacted against the third-party merchant responsible for listing the product. Additionally, the platform initiated outreach to customers who purchased the toy, urging them to safely dispose of or return the item, alongside processing full refunds.
Consumer protection organizations have voiced renewed alarm over the incident, warning that unregulated and low-cost cross-border online marketplaces present growing risks of circulating uncertified, unsafe merchandise to households. Safety experts continue to advise parents and consumers to exercise heightened caution when purchasing children’s goods online.
